I have been a renter in Santa Cruz since I arrived in 2001. I’m also an organic gardener who wants to do my part to shift towards a Harry Potter my patronus is a Grinch Christmas shirt that is just, sustainable and resilient. As a renter, I set up and had to abandon multiple gardens after only a year or two. Luckily I was able to secure a plot at Trescony Park community garden, where I’ve been farming the same plot since 2004.

In addition to being a renter without land to plant my own trees, my rental situation at the time also allowed me to prioritize a lot of time to volunteer work. I’ve got by with a modest income by not owning a car and living in a shared house.

Renters make up 57% of our town, but many have already been uprooted, and of those who remain every renter I know lives in fear of the next big increase that might put them out of their home.
