Having said that, you have to have a good reason to want to retire in New Orleans. The title st of living is not cheap. So you should not be moving there if you’re on a fixed income. On the other hand, it is a very welcoming city and there are tons of things to do. So if you are the social, likes joining things, type you will find plenty to do with your time. It has good healthcare, especially within the Oschner, Tulane or LCMC systems. The weather is incredibly hot and humid in all but the few winter months. It does not cool down significantly in the fall to call it a separate season. There is a minimal spring. Hurricane season lasts from May to November although it is unlikely to get storms past September. So you have to be ready for the season.
The condition of the streets is quite poor in New Orleans. Especially in residential areas. Even the nicest ones. Which can be expensive for title car owners. It gets better as you move towards the suburbs. Keep in mind this answer is focused on assuming you are thinking about moving to Orleans Parish. You can also consider Jefferson or other surrounding parishes, including across the lake. I do not know to what extent the housing costs/cost of living go down the farther you are from New Orleans proper. AFAIK, Jefferson is not much cheaper. But I assume you can research stats and calculators online for that.
