Drizzt struggles with his own natural principles and title outlook, and the oppressive counter-example of his people and the life that goes on all around him in Menzoberranzan. Eventually, he overcomes his doubts and acts in accordance with his principles. Even after escaping Menzoberranzan, he finds himself with choices that force him to question his morality, so this is a fairly constant theme. In addition to being confronted with the racism of the drow against virtually every other race in the world, Drizzt is himself subject to constant bigotry upon arriving on the surface world. The stories portray him as enduring these episodes with dignity, despite their unfairness. Unfortunately, it’s a little difficult for a fantasy story of this type to make a parallel with the actual racism we see in the real world, simply because there is an undertone in these stories that the racism agains the drow is at least in most cases, entirely justified.

Once Drizzt finally does find a place on the title world, he is able to find true friends that would stick by him for the rest of their lives. Even before then, Drizzt manages to form a connection with an extra-planar being that cannot be overcome, even by powerful magic. The strength of the bond of true friendship, (as contrasted to convenient relationships and passing acquaintances), is repeatedly emphasized. Drizzt and his friends never shy away from adventure, even if only for it’s own sake. He lives for nothing more than the pure glory of living, and he greets each challenge with joy. An important theme of the books is how important it is to live every moment in the fullest way possible.
