LOS ANGELES – A storied rivalry enters a new chapter this week as USC Men’s Tennis hosts UCLA in a rescheduled Big Ten showdown at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. First serve is set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, with the match streaming live for fans across the country.
This midweek matchup marks the second time the Trojans (10–6, 4–2 Big Ten) and Bruins (8–6, 6–0 Big Ten) have met this season—only now, it’s with added conference implications. Both teams have faced the same Big Ten opponents to date, but UCLA holds the edge in conference play, remaining undefeated after a recent win over Washington. USC, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Huskies.
The last time these rivals clashed, USC came out on top in a narrow 4–3 nonconference victory in Westwood. Senior Karl Lee, a former Bruin himself, sealed the win with a clutch performance, giving USC early bragging rights in this new Big Ten era.
Leading the Trojans this season are senior Peter Makk, currently ranked No. 30 nationally, and standout freshman Nathan Trouve, ranked No. 108. Makk has gone 8–4 in dual matches this spring, while Trouve holds a 7–5 overall record. Another rising name to watch is freshman Connor Church, who has quietly compiled a 6–3 dual record and won five of his last six outings.
Across the net, UCLA features a stacked singles lineup with four nationally ranked players: No. 17 Spencer Johnson, No. 29 Rudy Quan, No. 75 Emon Van Loben Sels, and No. 120 Aadarsh Tripathi. The Bruins also bring a top-ranked doubles duo in No. 19 Tripathi and Alexander Hoogmartens.
While USC lacks ranked doubles pairings, the team has claimed the doubles point in 11 of 16 matches this season—a trend that could again prove decisive. In their February meeting, the Trojans took the doubles point thanks to a gritty victory on Court 1 from graduate student Tristan Bradley and Peter Makk.
