Five Reasons to Be There: Virginia Tech vs. NC State
BLACKSBURG, Va. – After a long swing out West, the Hokies are back home and ready to make some noise. Virginia Tech men’s basketball (7-9, 2-3 ACC) returns to Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. ET, hosting longtime conference rival NC State (9-7, 2-3 ACC). Coming off a gritty 71–68 victory at California, the Hokies will look to keep the momentum rolling while defending their home floor, where they’ve already posted six wins this season.
Here are five reasons Hokie Nation won’t want to miss this midweek showdown.
1. A Rivalry Rich in History
When the Wolfpack and Hokies tip off, it will mark the 64th meeting between the two programs. The last clash saw Tech erupt for 51 second-half points en route to an 84–78 road win. Four Hokie starters hit double figures that night, highlighted by breakout performances from Jaydon Young (career-high 14 points), Brandon Rechsteiner (12 points), and Tyler Johnson, who recorded his first career double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds). With NC State giving up nearly 70 points per game in ACC play, Tech’s young core will be eager to light up the scoreboard again.
2. White Effect Night
Wednesday’s game isn’t just about basketball—it’s about atmosphere. The contest marks Tech’s first White Effect game of the season. Fans are encouraged to pack Cassell in white to create a sea of Hokie pride. The tradition always brings extra energy, turning the arena into one of the toughest environments in the ACC.
3. Free Swag for Fans
Didn’t pack your white gear? Don’t worry—arrive early and you could walk away with a free Hokies Basketball T-shirt, courtesy of the promotions team. Shirts will be handed out at the Promotions Booth just inside the entrance, while supplies last. It’s a chance to score some exclusive Tech merch and blend into the White Effect crowd.
4. High-Flying Halftime Entertainment
Don’t head to the concessions at halftime—you’ll want to stay put. The Virginia Tech Spirit Squads are set to preview their high-energy nationals routines ahead of their upcoming competition in Orlando (Jan. 17–19). Fans can expect acrobatic stunts from the Cheer team at the break, as well as a performance from the HighTechs dance team during a media timeout. It’s Hokie spirit at its best.
5. Stars on the Rise
This season has seen several Hokies step into the spotlight:
- Tobi Lawal (VCU transfer): The 6’8″ forward has been a force, leading Tech in points (192) and rebounds (94) through 16 games. His presence on the glass has anchored the Hokies, with team-high rebounds in nearly half of their contests.
- Mylyjael Poteat (Grad Student): After a summer of dedicated training, Poteat is shining—averaging 11 points per game on 53% shooting. His career-high 25-point outburst against Miami included the game-winning basket with 2.7 seconds left.
- Ben Hammond (Freshman): Already a clutch playmaker, Hammond leads the team in steals (16) and ranks second in assists (31). His game-winning dish to Poteat against Miami showed his poise beyond his years.
These rising standouts give Hokie fans plenty of reason to believe the best is yet to come.
