For Texas Rangers first baseman Jake Burger, the number on his back this season carries more than baseball tradition — it carries the love of a father.
The 28-year-old slugger will wear No. 21 for the 2025 season in tribute to his daughter, Penelope, who was born with Down syndrome on October 25, 2024. The condition, also known as Trisomy 21, occurs when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21.
In a heartfelt video shared by the Rangers, Burger explained why the change means so much to him:
“This is the first time I can pick a number that’s not just close to my heart, but close to a lot of people’s hearts. For me, it’s about spreading awareness and getting the word out about Down syndrome and how people can get support. I’m proud to represent my daughter, and so many others, every time I take the field.”
Burger and his wife, Ashlyn, are also parents to 2-year-old son Brooks Jacob. The couple said Penelope’s diagnosis didn’t shake them in the slightest.
“Our initial thought was simple,” Burger recalled. “I looked at Ash and said, ‘Okay, and?’ Life isn’t meant to be easy — it’s meant to be fulfilling — and this is God’s way of doing just that.”
Off the field, Burger is launching a foundation to support families with Down syndrome, aiming to provide resources, community, and hope.
Acquired by the Rangers in December 2024 from the Miami Marlins, Burger will make his Texas debut this season with a jersey that’s more than a uniform — it’s a message.
Every time No. 21 steps to the plate, it’s not just a player the crowd will see. It’s a father, an advocate, and a man proudly playing for something far bigger than the game.
