By Dominic Campbell | March 11, 2025

PITTSBURGH — As the Pitt Panthers kick off spring practice, excitement is building around the team’s fresh faces, who have officially been assigned their jersey numbers for the upcoming season.

Beginning March 11, Pitt will run 14 spring practices over five weeks, culminating in the highly anticipated Spring Game at Acrisure Stadium on April 12. This season, the Panthers are welcoming a strong influx of talent, including 14 players from the transfer portal and 13 mid-year freshmen enrollees, alongside some number changes among returning offensive linemen.

Last season, Pitt showed flashes of brilliance, starting with an impressive 7-0 run before finishing at 7-6. This spring, the team is eager to build on that momentum and continue pushing forward.

  • Quarterback Mason Heintschel takes No. 6, previously worn by Rodney Hammond Jr. (2021-24).

  • Running Back Ja’Kyrian Turner dons No. 25, a number last worn by TJ Harvison (2023).

  • Wide Receivers Bryce Yates (No. 80), Tony Kinsler (No. 17), and Cameron Sapp (No. 84) follow in the footsteps of past Panthers like Thaddeus Shaw, Jake Frantl, and Jake McConnachie.

  • Offensive Lineman Akram Elnagmi wears No. 60, last worn by Owen Drexel.

Defense

Pitt’s transfer portal haul features impact players ready to contribute immediately. Wide receivers Deuce Spann (No. 22), Andy Jean (No. 14), Cataurus “Blue” Hicks (No. 81), and Justin Cook (No. 28) bolster the offense, while the offensive line welcomes Kendall Stanley (No. 53), Keith Gouveia (No. 66), and Jeffrey Persi (No. 78).

On defense, notable transfers include defensive linemen Blaine Spires (No. 10), Joey Zelinsky (No. 45), Jaeden Moore (No. 56), linebacker Jayden Bonsu (No. 19), and defensive backs Kavir Bains-Marquez (No. 20) and Rashan Murray (No. 18). Special teams get a boost from placekicker James London (No. 83).
