ATLANTA – On Sunday, football took a back seat in Atlanta. Before their season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, members of the Atlanta Falcons stepped onto the field wearing Apalachee High School T-shirts, paying tribute to the victims of a devastating school shooting that claimed four lives just days earlier.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins and head coach Raheem Morris were among those in the shirts during warmups, sending a powerful message of solidarity. The gesture carried special weight given that Apalachee High, located in Winder, sits just 20 miles from the Falcons’ practice facility in Flowery Branch.

The tragedy, which left two students and two teachers dead and nine others injured, struck deeply within the community. A 14-year-old student has been charged in the fatal shooting.

“That was pretty sobering,” Cousins said in the days after the attack. “Praying for the families that are affected, the school, the community. It’s a tough deal. I’m going to go home tonight and hug and kiss my kids.”

Prior to kickoff, Mercedes-Benz Stadium observed a moment of silence to honor the victims. Then the game began, with the Steelers ultimately winning 18–10. But for the Falcons, the day’s most important act came before the first snap—standing with their neighbors in grief, remembrance, and unity.
