Illinois basketball head coach Brad Underwood has found himself at the intersection of recruiting success, fan culture, and internet humor. After landing Cal transfer Andrej Stojakovic, son of former NBA star Peja Stojakovic, Underwood isn’t just winning on the recruiting trail—he’s also leaning into a viral moment that has transformed into a merchandising opportunity.
Earlier this week, Underwood changed his X profile picture to an AI-generated portrait depicting him as an “international gangster”—a tongue-in-cheek nod to his recent recruiting haul of European talent. The image quickly took off among Illini fans, who affectionately dubbed him “Bradimir.”
Recognizing the meme’s momentum, Underwood partnered with Gameday Spirit, Illinois’ official merchandiser, to launch a limited collection of “Bradimir” T-shirts and hoodies. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Orange Krush Foundation, which supports charitable causes across the Champaign-Urbana community.
“Available now! Bradimir t-shirt and hooded tee!” Gameday Spirit announced on social media, tagging Illinois Basketball and Underwood in the release.
This playful embrace of fan culture isn’t just a fun diversion—it reflects the reality of Illinois basketball’s new identity. Over the past two offseasons, Underwood has leaned heavily into international recruiting. In 2024, Illinois landed Lithuania’s Kasparas Jakucionis, Croatia’s Tomislav Ivisic, and Canadian star Will Riley—all of whom played major roles last season.
Now, with Stojakovic joining Croatian center Zvonimir Ivisic, Serbian duo David Mirkovic and Mihailo Petrovic, and potentially Italian prospect Dame Sarr, nearly half of Illinois’ projected 2025–26 roster could hail from outside the United States.
For Illini fans, the “Bradimir” nickname captures the moment perfectly: a coach turned international recruiter, reshaping his program with European influence while embracing the internet’s sense of humor.
Whether or not Illinois can parlay its global roster into a national title run, one thing is clear: Underwood has become more than just a coach. He’s a cultural figure—equal parts strategist, recruiter, and now, meme kingpin.
