Iowa State’s Caden Matson Breaks 20-Year Drought with Electrifying Blocked Punt Return
Redshirt sophomore Caden Matson made a memorable mark on Iowa State football this past Saturday, returning a blocked punt for a touchdown—the first time an Iowa State player has scored on a blocked punt in 20 years. The special teams highlight helped the Cyclones secure a 43-21 victory over Baylor, pushing their season record to an impressive 5-0.
Matson, a defensive back from Humboldt High School in Iowa, showcased the same dynamic playmaking ability in college that made him a star in high school. During his senior year, Matson racked up 49 touchdowns—33 passing and 16 rushing—while leading Humboldt to the Class 3A state semifinals. As a multi-threat quarterback, he passed for 2,611 yards and ran for 1,636 yards, also earning two-time all-state honors and IPSWA first-team selection.
On Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium, Matson’s instinct and speed were on full display. When a Baylor punt was blocked, he scooped up the ball and sprinted downfield, crossing into the end zone for the game’s first-half lead. “I blacked out a little bit,” Matson admitted afterward. “I remember thinking I’ve got to cross the goal line, and once I did, I remember pointing to the crowd.”
Matson’s athleticism extends beyond football; he also lettered in basketball during high school. At Iowa State, he balances his gridiron success with studies in agricultural business, embodying the hardworking spirit of a true student-athlete.
