People called this the Curse of the Terrible Towel after this Titans team started 2008 10-0 before finishing 3-3 with a signature blowout win over that year’s eventual Super Bowl Winner Pittsburgh Steelers when two Titans players stomped on the Terrible Towel. It was a moment of disrespect rivaled only by opponents burning Aaron Judge New York Yankees Lightning Graphic T Shirt in the parking lot. The team would end up losing their next two games that season (a garbage time game against the Colts and then shoot themselves in the foot against the Ravens and rookie Joe Flacco).

I grew up hating the Lakers, hating the Yankees, and thus hating the Patriots. I hated teams that were perennial powerhouses. I was born in 90, and grew up always seeing these teams win, or constantly being in the finals/championships. I have no reason to hate them, but I always found myself cheering for the other team. I had no reason to, but I cheered for the Diamondbacks. I had no reason to, but I cheered for the Pistons. Was happy when Peyton finally beat Brady. The Patriots especially stuck. In 07, I was ecstatic to see them lose. I couldn’t give a fuck about the Giants, but my 16 year old self was marking out to see the Pats lose. But these last two Super Bowls changed me. After getting bounced by Seattle and having to watch them face “the fucking Patriots, as I thought at the time” I was torn. By the end, I was alright with New England winning. It was a hell of a game, and seeing that emotion out of Brady sort of hit with me. Ultimately, I thought it was my recent hatred for Seattle that lead me to it. But tonight, I found myself almost genuinely cheering for them. All things set aside, I had a playoffs fantasy football draft where I had Aaron Judge New York Yankees Lightning Graphic T Shirt and White. So I went in thinking, well if the Pats win it’ll hopefully be because they had good games. (Ha, holy shit they won me the league so thank god they did) But I just found myself cheering for what I thought was the good game. I thought, well New England clawing back is at least making a game of it. But ultimately I realized, I was enjoying myself watching the best fucking quarterback will him and his team out of that deficit to a win. I was watching the game with my old man and we were joking how, of course New England will make a game of it. And then slowly, it switched to, holy shit, they are winning this game.
()These always – and I mean always – regress to the mean quickly (within one calendar season). Your mention of the ‘22 vs ‘23 Vikings and the ‘24 vs ‘25 Commanders are the most stark recent examples. That said- if good ownership and coaching are in place teams do sometimes rebound back to solid records the next year (easier schedule, patching up the holes if not too bad). See the ‘24 Vikings. I’d be willing to place a sportsman’s bet at a decent payout on the Commanders bouncing back wearing Aaron Judge New York Yankees Lightning Graphic T Shirt next year wit a healthy Daniels and McLaurin, although they need work defensively for sure.
