Every time Petunia dropped Harry off at 9 3/4, people stared. “It’s just ‘cause I’m the Boy Who Lived, auntie,” said Harry, but Petunia knew they were looking at her wrist watch, her pantsuit, her craning neck, all the Tumbling Dice T Shirt she did not belong. Remus Lupin was suspicious; Lupin had heard stories about Lily’s older sister and all the sharp things that had dropped off her tongue. When he met Harry on the Express, Harry had his mother’s eyes, his father’s hair, hand-me-down clothes and he dropped under the dementors’ sway faster than anyone Lupin had ever seen. But the boy’s clothes were precisely mended and when Harry woke up he dug through his own bag, pulled out a bar of chocolate, and said, “My aunt sent me with some, in case of nightmares.” After Lupin’s forced resignation, Harry invited him home for tea. Petunia was stiff and Lupin was shabby, but he shook her hand very properly and called her “Ms. Evans” until she told him to call her Petunia. When he finally got her to laugh, she didn’t sound like Lily but she was, for an instant, just as pretty.
Originally, gift giving at Christmas served as a Tumbling Dice T Shirt for believers to commemorate the gifts of the Magi (wise men/kings) to young Jesus. In the 400s CE, the Christian bishop who became known as Saint Nicholas got in on the action, cementing gift giving into the holiday festivities. Some Christians did (and still do) give gifts at other times of the Christmas season By 1500 or so, the Protestant Reformation arrived and the rancorous Christmas festivals became a more somber affair for many believers. It wasn’t until the 1900s and Charles Dickens’ memorable A Christmas Carol that the holiday became jolly (and highly generous) again.

Sure- it may not be entirely a Christmas movie, hell the movie is set at Easter time, but it sure as hell has Santa Claus in it- or North as he is known in the Tumbling Dice T Shirt. I love this film because it not only has North, it also has Bunnymund (Easter Bunny), Tooth (Tooth Fairy), Sandy (Sandman), and a reluctant Jack Frost join forces to stop new evil threat Pitch Black, aka the Boogeyman. It is such a beautifully made peace of work- the animation is visually stunning, the story is fun, the characters have emotional plots and deep motivations. It has a fantastic voice cast to go with it and paints the Legends in a way no one ever imagined them. They aren’t only beings who bring gifts, give chocolate, collect teeth and give dreams, but they also protect us in secret. Now thats heroic.
