The Apollo 10’s lunar module named “Snoopy” is lost in space for Snoopy Hug Coffee And Woodstock No Coffee No Workee Shirt, but it might have been found again. Is it worth the effort or even technically possible for sending a mission to retrieve it? First of all, just to be clear, it’s only the ascent stage — the top half of the lunar module — that survives. The descent stage (bottom half) impacted the moon. By “retrieve”, I assume you mean bring it back to Earth. The LM was never meant to survive a reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, so bringing it back to Earth would require a spacecraft with a cargo bay that could hold the ascent stage. No such spacecraft currently exists.

I have no doubt we could pull off a retrieval of Snoopy if we wanted it badly enough and threw enough time and money at it — years and Snoopy Hug Coffee And Woodstock No Coffee No Workee Shirt. But it falls into the category of one of those things that would be cool but absolutely not worth doing. There’s really no benefit to it, other than the coolness factor of having it in a museum. And it’s not just that it would cost billions of dollars to pull off. Rather, it’s that we have limited dollars to spend in space, and if we sink our resources into retrieving Snoopy, there are other projects that would have to be shelved. Which would you rather do: Retrieve Snoopy or go to Mars? So yeah, it would be cool to have Snoopy sitting in a museum, and if kindly aliens ever fetched it for us, I’d be first in line at the museum to see it. But assuming we have to fetch it ourselves, it’s never going to happen.
