Last weekend on the London tube, I heard a nearby conversation about I’m a german it’s ok if you disagree with me I can’t force you to be right shirt talented Indian man who spoke many languages, including fluent German. I casually chimed in, saying “yeah, we Indians can do that sometimes” – in German. A very pleasant conversation followed after the family (a rather multi-racial German family, too! A Berlin thing, I guess!), had recovered from the initial shock. I had a very positive experience trying to learn German during my internship in Cologne. Every morning we had a jour fixe where we would go around in a circle talking about our key tasks for the day. At first it was super awkward to be the only person who didn’t understand anyone else, but it got better and three months later, I sent out a farewell email to the office – in German!

Best I’m a german it’s ok if you disagree with me I can’t force you to be right shirt
As the only non-German in the team, I was already a bit of a I’m a german it’s ok if you disagree with me I can’t force you to be right shirt. Some of my colleagues noticed and encouraged my attempts to learn German by replying and writing to me in what I called “baby German” – simplified and at an easy pace. It was a bit weird at the start, but by the end I was loving it. I became decreasingly conscious and increasingly confident, even though I never went to a proper class. I have initiated many conversations similar to the one at the start of this answer. 100% of the time, people have been pleasantly surprised and replied to me in German, helping me understand new words while talking about something non-trivial (no small talk with Germans!) I don’t think any German would get annoyed if you try to speak German. Indifference followed by a switch to English for convenience – that’s the most “hostile” reaction I have observed to my advances. Of course, a lot depends on context, if you have already built a friendship with a German while speaking another language, it can sometimes be hard to switch, for reasons of familiarity. One of my best German friends still talks to me in English, but we do share German jokes with each other from time to time.
